U.K.'s Top 2 Parties Locked in Election Standoff

The battle to form the UK's next government begins as the Conservatives make big gains but just fail to win an overall majority.

The Conservatives and Labour jockeyed for the support of Britain's smaller parties Friday after a close-fought, confusing election that, for the first time in almost four decades, produced no outright winner.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg dented Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown's hopes of staying in power by calling on the Conservatives to try to form a government, without indicating whether his centrist party would be willing to join a coalition.
