The Race for SC State Superintendent of Education: Whom Do You Support, and Why?

Unlike many states, the chief state school officer or State Superintendent in South Carolina is elected every four years.  With the retirement of our current State Superintendent, Mick Zais, eight candidates are seeking the Republican nomination to head the South Carolina Department of Education.  Seven of the eight recently participated in a candidate forum hosted by the Fairfield County Republican Party.  They are: Gary Burgess, Anderson County Board of Education member; Meka Childs, a former Department of Education deputy superintendent; Lexington attorney Amy Cofield; GOP activist Sheri Few of Lugoff; University of South Carolina professor Don Jordan; Charleston County school board member Elizabeth Moffly; and Molly Spearman, director of the S.C. Association of School Administrators.  Sally Atwater was not able to attend due to a previous engagement.

We believe that only two of these candidates merit consideration for the position of State Superintendent, and in the next several weeks we will let you know who we believe can best serve the families of South Carolina.  In the meantime, please respond to our poll in the right sidebar and leave a comment below.  We welcome your thoughts about this race, the candidates, and the issues they have highlighted.

Whom do you support, and why?
