His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, May He Rest in Peace

On this very sad day for Her Majesty the Queen, the British people, the people of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Her Majesty's other realms, the Commonwealth, and much of the world, I can think of no more fitting and beautiful words than those Alfred, Lord Tennyson addressed to Queen Victoria in dedicating to Prince Albert his great narrative poem, Idylls of the King.

Break not, O woman's-heart, but still endure;
Break not, for thou art Royal, but endure,
Remembering all the beauty of that star
Which shone so close beside Thee that ye made
One light together, but has past and leaves
The Crown a lonely splendour.
May all love,
His love, unseen but felt, o'ershadow Thee,
The love of all Thy sons encompass Thee,
The love of all Thy daughters cherish Thee,
The love of all Thy people comfort Thee,
Till God's love set Thee at his side again!

A Royal Wedding: Sixty-five Years Ago Today

Congratulations to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. Today they mark 65 years of marriage

They are an example to follow but also a splendid and royal rebuke to our times

Congratulations to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh who have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary today. It is a significant achievement. I don’t mean the longevity aspect which is out of their hands, a mixture of luck and good genes; I mean the example they have set the country of a faithful and enduring marriage, based on mutual affection and respect. According to the Telegraph report, Prince Philip wrote to the Queen Mother on his honeymoon, saying that his wife was “the only ‘thing’ in the world which is absolutely real to me and my ambition is to weld the two of us into a new combined existence that will not only be able to withstand the shocks directed at us but will also have a positive existence for the good”.

Queen Makes Duke of Edinburgh Head of the Navy as 90th Birthday Gift

The Queen sprang a 90th birthday surprise on the Duke of Edinburgh yesterday by making him Lord High Admiral, the titular head of the Royal Navy.

Her Majesty has held the title herself since a re-organisation of the Navy in 1964, but decided to bestow it on her husband as a gift to mark his landmark birthday and to show her gratitude for his unstinting support during 59 years as her consort.

A royal insider said the Duke was “really, really touched” by the honour, which the Queen told him about during a private birthday lunch for two at Buckingham Palace.
