Former Georgetown GOP Chair Tom Swatzel Launches Campaign Consulting Firm

Tom Swatzel
Tom Swatzel stepped down this past weekend after two extraordinarily successful terms as Chairman of the Georgetown County Republican Party.  We profiled just one of his many political wins here last November.  And South Carolina political leaders took note of his many accomplishments in a flood of congratulatory messages as his service to the Georgetown GOP came to an end.  But the good news  is that those winning political skills will now be available to Republican candidates throughout South Carolina and beyond.

The two-term party chairman, who honored a term limit pledge by not seeking reelection Saturday at the county party convention, Tuesday announced the formation of Swatzel Strategies, a campaign, issue advocacy, and public and media relations consulting firm.

Pope Sees European 'Amnesia' about Christian Roots

"To declare that Europe does not have Christian roots is like claiming that a man may live without oxygen or nourishment ," said Pope Benedict XVI on April 11 as he welcomed a new ambassador from Croatia to the Holy See.

Noting that Croatia will soon become a full member of the European Union, the Pope told the new envoy, Filip Vucak, that the move should not entail a step toward secularization. The people of Croatia, the Pontiff should, should be bring into the European community “their rich Croatian historical heritage and the Christian culture with which it is deeply permeated.” Pope Benedict added that Europe needs constant reminders of its own Christian heritage. He said:
Dour voices dispute Europe's religious roots with bewildering regularity. Amnesia and the denial of historical evidence have become customary.
Pope Benedict will be visiting Croatia in June.

The New "Intolerance"

Lt. Col. Bill Connor and Prince Harry, Afghanistan, December 2007

A Charleston Professor of Philosophy (recently) gave readers a small taste of the new intolerance.  This was in his article opposing the South Carolina Marriage Protection Amendment.  Using the Liberal talking points, this professor compared support for traditional marriage to racist opposition to interracial marriage.  The clear implication throughout the writing: Those supporting “one man and one woman” marriage are similar to racists of the past.  The intolerant intent of this comparison is to scare away principled disagreement.  Being tagged a “racist” or “homophobe” is the new McCarthyism in America.  The professor even tossed in the nuclear term “homophobic” to describe Judges (what a “conservative” group they are!) who factor sexual orientation when deciding child custody cases.

In response; comparing the civil rights issue with gay marriage is wrong and demeaning to the values of civil rights leaders.  The following quote from the Reverend Martin Luther King Junior made clear those values.  In “Letters from a Birmingham jail” Dr. King wrote:  “(Civil rights protesters stand for) the most sacred values in our Judeo-Christian heritage”.  In no way can gay marriage be considered a “sacred” Judeo-Christian value.   Dr. King was an ordained Baptist minister and used the teachings of the Bible as the foundation for the civil rights struggle.  Colin Powell spoke directly to this issue when some politicians compared integration of gays into the military to the integration of African-Americans: “Skin color is a benign characteristic, sexuality is not”.  A top black enlisted man, called to testify at Congressional hearings about gays in the military, claimed he found it “insulting” to make this comparison.  The fight for racial equality is just too important to be compared with the militant homosexual agenda.

The Professor attempted to make a preposterous argument for Biblical support of homosexual marriage.  This was an attempt to show Christianity is “unclear” and therefore cannot be used to oppose gay marriage.  Since his argument is becoming more “vogue” among the certain Liberal Christian leaders, it deserves answer.  Some won’t accept the clear Old Testament prohibitions against homosexuality in Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy (and that Jesus claimed he did “not come to destroy the (moral) law but to fulfill”).  Some, including the professor, will not accept the many references decrying homosexuality throughout the New Testament Epistles.  However, any intellectually honest Christian must accept the Words of Jesus Christ speaking directly about marriage and divorce in Matthew 19:4-6: “Haven’t you read,” he (Jesus) replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?  So they are no longer two, but one.  Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate.”  Jesus’ quote is spoken at all Christian wedding ceremonies to commemorate the prescribed joining of one man and one woman.  Homosexual marriage supporters may disagree with the Bible.  However, the attempted argument about support for gay marriage is just specious.

In addition to Liberal intolerance against those supporting traditional marriage, orthodox Christian belief is under increasing attack.  Kinky Friedman, a Texas Gubernatorial candidate claimed: “He (Texas Governor Rick Perry) doesn’t think very differently from the Taliban, does he?”  This came after Perry was asked whether or not he agreed with the belief in Jesus Christ was the only Way to salvation.  Perry’s “Taliban” response to this reporter’s question was as follows:  “In my faith, that’s what it (Bible) says, and I’m a believer of that…..my Christian faith teaches that the Way is through Jesus Christ.”  Perry was also criticized by politician Carolyn Keeton Strayhorn: “(I here to tell Governor Perry) There are many ways to heaven” She told the Dallas Morning News.  Texas Democratic politician Chris Bell opined about Perry: “when you are in public office, you need to respect people of all other faiths and denominations.”

Governor Perry has a personal belief, which holds faith in Jesus Christ being necessary for salvation.  This is the traditional and historic Christian confession derived from many verses in the Bible, including (John 14:6):  “I (Jesus) am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes to the father but by me.”  And as Peter said of Jesus Christ in Acts 4:12: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men which we must be saved.”  Most Christians throughout history, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., have held to this same Christian belief.

Think about something: Is a personal belief in what follows death “intolerant” to those outside that faith?  Atheists believe all human existence ends at death.  To many, that “faith” is cruel and hopeless.  However, most would also agree that an atheist or other non-Christians are entitled to hold these kinds of personal beliefs without persecution.  Unfortunately, in the case of Christian Governor Perry, intolerant secular progressives demand he end his personal belief to continue in public office.  What’s wrong with this picture and why are Americans accepting the steady erosion of values.

The intolerant secular progressive attack machine should be stopped.  It has rolled over Europe, bringing utter despair, and created much havoc to the United States over the past 35 years.  If we cower in silence now, we have no right to complain when the real persecution comes to our children.

Bill Connor is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve who received the Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his service in combat as the senior American advisor in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  He is a 1990 graduate of The Citadel.  After serving over ten years as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army, he received his Juris Doctorate from University of South Carolina in 2005. An attorney with Hamilton and Associates, he is currently a candidate for South Carolina Republican State Chairman.

"There is sweet music here that softer falls
Than petals from blown roses on the grass,
Or night-dews on still waters between walls
Of shadowy granite, in a gleaming pass;
Music that gentlier on the spirit lies,
Than tired eyelids upon tired eyes;

Music that brings sweet sleep down from the blissful skies."

From the Pastor - 'Moral Vision'

A weekly column by Father George Rutler.

The Raising of Lazarus
Caravaggio (1571-1610)

The raising of Lazarus was the last straw for those who refused to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah. When Christ healed the man born blind, attempts to pretend it had not happened failed, and the last recourse was to claim it was a sinful act, violating the Sabbath laws. At first, the refusal to rejoice in these great signs seems as remarkable as the signs themselves, but it is typical of a cramped view of the world, by which close-minded people deny reality. When Jesus called Lazarus from the tomb, “many believed in Him,” but others rushed to the Pharisees, who feared that the Romans would react violently. The miracle was evident, but the desire for social and political control took precedence. This miracle was the efficient cause for the start of the Passion.

Thus, we see the flaw in the adage that “seeing is believing.” It is possible for human pride to refuse to believe what it sees. Of course, one must guard against illusions that trick human vision, but there is a willfulness in obtuse people that rejects palpable evidence. Having received the report about Lazarus, the Pharisees reacted like Sergeant Frank Drebin, the character in the “Naked Gun” film series: “Nothing to see here! Please disperse.”

That kind of vaunting of ideology over truth would focus on the sins and failings of Christians to be Christians, rather than acknowledge the saints and miracles of Christ in history. Recently, after much investigation by medical experts, Bishop Emmanuel Delmas of Angers, France confirmed the extraordinary healing of Serge François in 2002. This 56-year-old man with a paralyzed leg was instantly cured at Lourdes and walked 975 miles to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela in thanksgiving. This received little publicity because it was outside the secular media’s ability to account for such a sign.

It is easier to distract people by calling attention to ecclesiastical gossip and controversies than to admit the spiritual combat that engages the world. Consider the recent massacre of 1,000 people by Muslims in the Ivory Coast town of Duékoué. Few press agencies mentioned that the victims were Catholics seeking sanctuary in the Salesian mission of Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus. William Blake wrote: “This life’s dim windows of the soul / Distorts the heavens from pole to pole / And leads you to believe a lie / When you see with, not through, the eye.”

Humility is truth, and opens the eyes to what human pride would keep in darkness. Moral vision interprets the signs of the times, and man is accountable for how he understands. As He headed for the cross, Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say ‘We see,’ your guilt remains” (John 9:41).

Santorum Sweeps Greenville County GOP Convention Straw Poll; New Party Officers Elected

Former Senator Rick Santorum
South Carolina's largest and most conservative Republican organization set off national shock waves today by expressing their overwhelming support for former Senator Rick Santorum, among more than a dozen candidates seeking the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2012.  Greenville County GOP convention delegates were addressed by Santorum, former Speaker Newt Gingrich, and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour.

Santorum received 31% of votes cast.  Gingrich followed with 14%, and real estate mogul Donald Trump and Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann were tied for third with 7% each.

The 447 delegates also elected long-time party activist Betty Poe as their County Chairman.  Poe, President of the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women, faced minor opposition. RINO Hunt leader and conservative activist Harry Kibler was elected Vice Chairman without opposition.

But the big news of the day, nationally, will be Santorum's stunning victory.  South Carolina's "first in the South" primary will be key in 2012, as it has been in the past.  Santorum received a big boost today on the road to the White House.

Russian Prelate Says 'Godless' West Doomed to Collapse

Russia represents the best hope for Europe's future, according to a prominent official of the Russian Orthodox Church.

"Russia has no future without conscience, morals and normal human relations and without faith," Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin told a Russian television audience. He said that Russia's abiding religious faith is the reason why the country represents "the best future" for Europe.

Other European countries, and the US, have lost their moral bearings because they have embraced secularism, the Russian cleric said. "The West is now that same godless system which has collapsed as Communism, it has collapsed as Nazism, and it will collapse as capitalism."
