Constitution Party Nominates Virgil Goode for President

The former Congressman has held strong views on illegal immigration and citizenship.

Former U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode of Rocky Mount secured the Constitution Party's nomination for president at the party's convention Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.

Goode was one of six candidates vying for the spot. He won on the first round of balloting with 203 votes, with 202 votes needed to receive the nomination.

Goode served 24 years in the Virginia Senate — making headlines when he helped parlay a power-sharing agreement between Democrats and Republicans after the 1995 elections left it evenly split. He was elected to Congress in 1996, succeeding L.F. Payne. Goode left the Democratic Party to become an independent before the 2000 election and then joined the Republican Party ahead of the 2002 election. Goode was unseated in 2008 by Democrat Tom Perriello.

Remembering Chuck Colson

"Chuck’s life is a testimony to God’s power to forgive, redeem, and transform."

Evangelical Christianity lost one of its most eloquent and influential voices today with the death of Charles W. “Chuck” Colson. The Prison Fellowship and Colson Center for Christian Worldview founder died at 3:12 p.m. on Saturday from complications resulting from a brain hemorrhage. Colson was 80. 

A Watergate figure who emerged from the country’s worst political scandal, a vocal Christian leader and a champion for prison ministry, Colson spent the last years of his life in the dual role of leading Prison Fellowship, the world’s largest outreach to prisoners, ex-prisoners and their families, and the Colson Center, a teaching and training center focused on Christian worldview thought and application.

Colson was speaking at a Colson Center conference when he was overcome by dizziness. Quickly surrounded by friends and staff, Colson was sent to the Fairfax Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. On March 31, he underwent two hours of surgery to remove a pool of clotted blood on the surface of his brain. At times, Chuck showed encouraging indicators of a possible recovery, but his health took a decided turn, and he went to be with the Lord. His wife, Patty, and the family were with him in the last moments before he entered eternity.

Revered by his friends and supporters, Colson won the respect of those who disagreed with his religious and political views thanks to his tireless work on behalf of prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families. Colson maintained that the greatest joy in life for him was to see those “living monuments” to God’s grace: Prisoners transformed by the love of Jesus Christ. And thanks to the work of Colson and Prison Fellowship volunteers across the country, there are thousands of those living monuments among us today.

The Colson family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Charles Colson Legacy Fund. Condolence cards may be sent to Prison Fellowship Ministries, 44180 Riverside Parkway, Lansdowne, VA 20176.

Elderly people often think that some of their recollections are unimportant in the grand scheme of things. With the Titanic anniversary still vivid, there are eyewitness accounts of three priests giving general absolution: Juozas Montvila of Lithuania, Josef Benedikt Peruschitz of Germany and Thomas Byles of England. Sister Mary Patricia, a Religious Sister of Mercy, remembered a woman using her hat to stuff a hole in their lifeboat, and Eva Hart said the orchestra really did play “Nearer my God to Thee.” I visited Guglielmo Marconi’s widow, who mentioned that her husband had cancelled his trip at the last moment and was pleased that his radio system on the Carpathia helped to save lives, although other ships closer by had shut down their receivers for the evening. Our own Murray Hill resident, J. P. Morgan, had a ticket but did not use it.

As “God is in the details,” we are grateful for little asides in the Gospel, which the Holy Spirit did not think minor or incidental. Luke’s attention to detail made him the patron saint of artists. John usually gave the larger picture with soaring theology, but he does give poignant details in the Resurrection narrative: how he outran Peter; the shroud and napkin neatly folded in the tomb; what the Risen Christ ate in the Upper Room; the wound in Christ’s side big enough for a hand to fit in; and the number of fish caught when Christ appeared on the Galilean shore. Our Lord wants us to pay attention to these things: “He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in that which is greater: and he that is unjust in that which is little, is unjust also in that which is greater” (Luke 16:10).

There is a tradition that the youngest apostle, as an old man, kept saying over and over again, “Little children love one another,” and some of his hearers thought he might be afflicted with the repetitiousness of a mind growing vague with age. He insisted: “I shall keep saying this, for it is what I heard from the lips of the Master.” John ended his Gospel account: “There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written” (John 21:25).

It is old wisdom that the stone on the Easter tomb was rolled away, not so that Jesus might come out but so that the disciples might go in. With His risen body’s character of “subtlety,” the Lord was no longer limited by His own laws of physics, but He did want us to enter in and see how empty the tomb was, so that we might “know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19).

Organization Representing 1 million Pennsylvania Christians Supports Catholics on HHS Mandate

An organization representing one million Christians in southwestern Pennsylvania has pledged its support for the Roman Catholic bishop and asked the Obama administration to change the law requiring religious institutions to provide contraception and abortion-inducing drugs in their health care plans.

The Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania, a group representing 2,000 congregations and 26 denominations in ten counties in the region, released a statement last Friday expressing anxiety about the HHS mandate.

Virginia Will Not Cooperate with NDAA Detention

On Wednesday, the Virginia legislature overwhelmingly passed a law that forbids state agencies from cooperating with any federal attempt to exercise the indefinite detention without due process provisions written into sections 1021 and 1022 of the National Defense Authorization Act.  We hope South Carolina and other states will soon join the Old Dominion in standing up for freedom and the protection of her people from a tyrannical President and federal government.

A crushing situation is emerging for, not only Barack Obama, but also for the American people as a landmark statement has been made by the Obama administration that is going to turn the entire 2012 Presidential race and potentially much more on its head.

Lawyers representing the current sitting President of the United States of America have been forced, under penalty of perjury, to admit that the long-form birth certificate presented by the White House in April of 2011 is a total forgery.

In a NJ ballot access eligibility case spawned by Tea Party activists, attorneys representing Obama had to admit the document presented to the American people by Obama himself is actually knowingly faked and was used to fool the American public into believing a complete fabrication.
